Rest

Sleep is the greatest rejuvenator; it restores strength to muscles, nerves, and brain. During sleep the body repairs, reenergizes, and prepares for renewed activity. One hour of sleep before midnight is equal to 2 hours of sleep after midnight. During a day of work and activity, toxins build up in our system which cannot immediately be thrown off. These toxins product fatigue—that well-known weariness at the end of the day. Sleep gives the body time to expel wastes and to make repairs.

My brother, you are in need or rest…Make it a habit not to sit up after nine 0’clock. Every light should be extinguished. This turning night into day is a wretched, health destroying habit…, is very injurious to health. It calls blood to the brain and then there is restlessness and wakefulness, and the precious sleep, which should rest the body, does not come when desired. MR vol 9: pg 46.

Rest is not synonymous with sleep, the four types of rest are:

Physical Rest—sitting, lying down, or relaxing. Not eating late at night or before bed.

Sensory Rest—quietness and refraining from using the eyes.

Emotional Rest—a withdrawing from the ups and downs caused by personal interaction.

Mental Rest—a detaching of the mind from all intellectual demands or activity.

Healthy Tips

Avoid eating at least three hours before bedtime.

Go to bed before 10:00 pm at night. The body heals itself between the hours of 10:00pm and 12:00am. In addition, the later you go to bed the greater the risk of increasing your blood pressure.

Research shows that going to bed after 10:00 p.m. at night continually for two weeks elevates blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Sleep in a dark room, not with light shining in the room.

Spend some time weekly to meditate and relax.
